About Us
The San Diego EMDR Trauma Recovery Network (SD TRN) is a chapter of Trauma Recovery, EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs (aka HAP). We are a trauma volunteer network of skilled mental health clinicians who are EMDR Certified and/or have completed EMDR Basic Training (Part 1 and 2 plus 10 hours of consultation) and received additional training in other EMDR protocols. We help the San Diego community by providing up to five sessions (5 hours) of pro-bono EMDR therapy for trauma related symptoms after a local disaster. We work with the local first responders, the Red Cross, 2-1-1 and other agencies to help our community heal. We offer ongoing services to TIP Volunteers to support their compassion and mission to assist first responders.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach for the treatment of trauma. EMDR has been originated and developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1989. Dr. Shapiro is a Senior Research Fellow Emeritus at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, Executive Director of the EMDR Institute in Watsonville, CA, and founder and President Emeritus of the Trauma Recovery/EMDR HAP, a non-profit organization that coordinates disaster response and low fee trainings worldwide in addition to local Trauma Recovery Networks (TRN). Research has shown that EMDR is an effective treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). EMDR is a short-term therapy where processing every detail of the incident is not necessary.
What is a TRN?
A TRN is a Trauma Recovery Network organized with the help of HAP staff and local volunteer EMDR therapists. The SD TRN will enlist volunteer therapists in advance of a disaster and by this website and other resources, will help connect the community to the volunteer members for EMDR Therapy after a traumatic event.
Mission
We are committed to strengthen and support the San Diego community after a natural or human-made disaster by offering EMDR Therapy, an empirically supported treatment for post-traumatic stress. Our skilled team of volunteer EMDR therapists will provide services at no charge for up to five sessions (5 hours) to first responders and the San Diego community.
History
The San Diego EMDR TRN was officially launched in August 2013 by caring and experienced EMDR therapists willing to offer their services should a disaster occur in San Diego. We believe in prevention and recovery and are preparing our TRN network in advance of a traumatic event. We have witnessed the success and support of EMDR HAP and other EMDR TRN groups throughout the country and commend them for showing us the way to support the San Diego community. We hope to make a difference in the way we heal our community from trauma.
